INEC to begin nationwide voter register revalidation April 13

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it will begin a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise on April 13, 2026, ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. The commission confirmed that preparations are underway across all states, with resident electoral commissioners directed to mobilise personnel and equipment.

In a letter signed by the commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC outlined a phased timetable for the exercise. It will start at the local government level from April 13 to May 2, move to registration areas from May 5 to May 11, and then to polling units between May 13 and May 19, before returning to local governments for a second phase from May 20 to May 29.

The commission says the exercise is designed to update and clean the national voters’ register by addressing issues such as duplicate entries, underage registrations, non-citizens and records of deceased persons. INEC chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, says these challenges have continued to undermine confidence in the electoral process.

As part of preparations, the commission held a training workshop on March 30 at the Electoral Institute to equip officials for the exercise. INEC says a credible voter register remains essential for free, fair and transparent elections.
