The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will review the Electoral Act 2026 and release a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections. The commission says the move is to ensure full compliance with the new law.
INEC had earlier scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, and governorship and state assembly polls for March 6, 2027. But, the National Assembly has reduced the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days under the amended law.
Political parties and legal experts say a fresh timetable has become necessary following the changes. They argue that once a new electoral law comes into effect, all preparations must align with its provisions to avoid legal challenges.
