Injury Rules Out Osayi-Samuel from Super Eagles’ World Cup Qualifiers

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle appears vindicated in his decision to omit Bright Osayi-Samuel from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, after Birmingham City manager Chris Davies confirmed the defender was unfit to play.

Osayi-Samuel, initially listed in the 23-man squad, was replaced by Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi following his absence from Birmingham’s recent fixture against Wrexham. Davies told local reporters that the right-back was still recovering from a knock and was “not ready” for selection.

The decision had sparked fan debate, given Osayi-Samuel’s status as Nigeria’s only natural right-back in the absence of Ola Aina. With the defender sidelined, Chelle is expected to deploy alternative defensive options as the Super Eagles seek maximum points against Lesotho and Benin to strengthen their qualification hopes for the 2026 World Cup.
