Inquest into Death of Chimanda Adichie’s Son to Begin April 14

A coroner sitting at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos has fixed April 14, 2026, for the start of an inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu, son of Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege. Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji adjourned the matter on Wednesday following a preliminary session.

The court said the application for an inquest was made by the Chief Coroner of Lagos State at the request of the Attorney-General. Counsel appearing included Senior Advocate of Nigeria Kemi Pinheiro for the family, Adebola Rahman for the Attorney-General, Cheluchi Onyemelukwe for Atlantis Hospital and a separate representative for Euracare.

Nkanu Adichie died on January 7, 2026, after receiving care at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos. He had been referred for diagnostic tests, including an MRI, lumbar puncture and insertion of a central line, ahead of a planned medical evacuation to the United States.

The parents allege medical negligence, including improper administration of propofol and failures in monitoring and emergency response, and say the child developed severe complications while being moved after the MRI. The court has directed all parties to file witness statements before the next hearing.
