The International Olympic Committee has announced a new policy on eligibility for women’s events at future Olympic Games. The decision introduces updated criteria that will guide participation in female categories.
Under the new rules, athletes seeking to compete in women’s events will be required to undergo a one-time Sex Determining Region Y gene test to detect the presence of the Y chromosome. The policy is scheduled to take effect from the 2028 Summer Olympics and will not apply to past competitions.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry said the decision is based on scientific and medical evidence, noting that biological differences can influence performance in sports that require strength, power, and endurance. She added that the framework is designed to promote fairness and safety in women’s categories.

The IOC also stated that all international sports federations under its authority will be expected to adopt the policy across both Summer and Winter Games. Further guidance will be issued ahead of the 2028 Olympics.
