IPI Nigeria Condemns Suspension of Badegi FM, Warns Governor Bago

The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has condemned the suspension of Badegi 90.1 FM, an independent radio station in Minna, Niger State, describing the move as a brazen attack on press freedom.

The shutdown, reportedly ordered by Governor Mohammed Bago during an APC meeting on 1 August, followed the station’s broadcast of content critical of the state government.

IPI Nigeria, in a statement signed by its President, Musikilu Mojeed, and Legal Adviser, Tobi Soniyi, said the action fits a worrying pattern of repression under Governor Bago’s tenure.

The Institute cited previous incidents, including the detention of a journalist in January and the assault of another in 2023, as further evidence of a hostile environment for the press.

IPI demanded an immediate reversal of the suspension and warned that failure to comply could see Governor Bago added to its “Book of Infamy.”
