IPI Seeks Probe Into Assault on NTA Reporter in Niger State

The International Press Institute has called on President Bola Tinubu to caution Mohammed Umar Bago over actions it says are undermining press freedom in Niger State.

In a statement on Monday, IPI Nigeria cited the alleged assault on Musa Mikail, a senior reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority, during a Ramadan event in Bida on 13 March 2026. The organisation said the journalist was reportedly attacked and removed from the venue by security personnel linked to the governor.

IPI Nigeria said the incident reflects a pattern of hostility towards journalists, referencing previous cases involving the detention and harassment of media workers in the state.

The group has called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the incident and sanction those responsible, while urging authorities to uphold the rights of journalists to carry out their duties without interference.
