Iran and Russia have signed a 25 billion dollar agreement to build four nuclear power reactors in southern Iran. State media in Tehran say the new facilities will be located in Sirik, Hormozgan Province, across the Gulf from the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
The deal was confirmed on Friday as the UN Security Council prepared to vote on a resolution backed by China and Russia to delay the reimposition of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

Iran currently operates a single nuclear plant in Bushehr, also built by Russia, with a one-gigawatt capacity. The new reactors are expected to generate five gigawatts of electricity to ease the country’s recurring power shortages.
Moscow has condemned US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and continues to oppose tougher international sanctions. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the UN General Assembly this week that Tehran would never seek to build a nuclear weapon.
