Iran Announces Nigeria Friendly Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Iran’s men’s national football team will face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in an international friendly on 27 March. The fixture was confirmed on Tuesday by Amirmahdi Alavai, spokesperson for the Iranian Football Federation. The venue and kick-off time have yet to be announced.

The match forms part of Iran’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. Iran will also play Costa Rica on 30 March and have been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.

Nigeria last met Iran at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where the group stage match ended goalless. The Super Eagles did not qualify for the 2026 tournament after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final of the African play-offs, but the Nigeria Football Federation has petitioned FIFA, alleging Congo fielded ineligible players.
