Iran Considers Boycott of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali says the country may boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The minister made the announcement during a television interview with Iranian state media. He said the decision is linked to the ongoing attack on Iran by the United States and Israel.

Iran had already qualified for the tournament after finishing among the top teams in its group during the Asian qualifiers last year. However, the country was also absent from a recent FIFA planning meeting for participating nations held in Atlanta.

Donyamali says Iran may withdraw from the competition if current tensions continue. If that happens, Iran would join a small number of countries that have boycotted the World Cup in the past despite qualifying for the tournament.
