Irish President Michael D Higgins has described a UN Commission of Inquiry report, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, as a significant document that should prompt urgent international action.
President Higgins said nations must consider excluding both perpetrators and those supplying them with arms from the United Nations. He added that trade links with such states should also be reconsidered, stressing the moral obligation to act decisively.

Ireland, which formally recognised Palestinian statehood last year, has drawn parallels between its own independence struggle and the Palestinian quest for self-determination. The government has also supported South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide.
