Israel has officially cut ties with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), following a warning from another UN agency about an impending famine in Gaza.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that it has canceled a cooperation agreement dating back to 1967, which served as the legal foundation for Israel’s relations with UNRWA.
Foreign Minister Israel Katz stated that UNRWA has been complicit in violence, accusing its employees of participating in the October 7 attacks and alleging that many are operatives of Hamas. He emphasized that the agency is part of the problem in Gaza rather than a solution.
The Israeli parliament recently passed two controversial bills that prohibit UNRWA from operating within Israeli territory and mandate the closure of its offices in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza. This decision marks a significant escalation in Israel’s stance toward UNRWA amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
