A ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah has come into effect, marking a potential end to a 14-month conflict that has claimed thousands of lives. The truce, brokered with the mediation of Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, followed an announcement by US President Joe Biden that an agreement had been reached to halt the “devastating” cross-border fighting. The ceasefire began at 4am local time (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
Under the terms of the agreement, Israel will gradually withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon over the next 60 days, while the Lebanese army will deploy to the territory. The move is seen as a step towards restoring stability in the region, although concerns remain about the durability of the ceasefire. Notably, Hezbollah, which was not directly involved in the negotiations, has yet to issue a formal statement on the truce.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of displaced civilians have begun returning to their homes in southern Lebanon, defying Israeli military warnings to wait until its troops have fully withdrawn.
