Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has restated his government’s firm opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state as the UN Security Council prepares to vote on a US-backed Gaza peace resolution. The draft seeks international approval for a transitional administration and a temporary security force in Gaza, following the ceasefire deal brokered by Washington.
The latest text makes reference to a potential future Palestinian state — a point Israeli ministers have strongly rejected. Prime Minister Netanyahu insisted Israel’s position has not changed, amid criticism from coalition partners who accused him of being slow to counter recent international recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Other senior ministers echoed the rejection, saying Israel will not accept any arrangement leading to Palestinian statehood. The resolution would mark the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, which has facilitated hostage releases and prisoner swaps.
