Israel to Call Up 60,000 Reservists for Gaza Offensive

Israel has announced plans to call up 60,000 reservists as it prepares to expand military operations in Gaza City, its largest urban centre. Defence Minister Israel Katz has approved the move, which also extends the service of 20,000 reservists. The military says the coming phase will target some of Gaza’s most densely populated areas.

An Israeli military official told reporters the operation would be “gradual, precise and targeted,” including in neighbourhoods where forces had not previously operated. Troops have already begun advancing into Zeitoun and Jabalia as part of the initial stages.

The announcement comes as human rights groups warn that Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is worsening. Many residents have been repeatedly displaced, with widespread destruction, food shortages and reports of starvation deaths amid fears of famine.

Medical sources in Gaza say at least 35 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks on Wednesday, including 10 people seeking aid. Reports from the ground describe intensified shelling in Gaza City, while residents in southern areas designated as “safe zones” also continue to face deadly strikes.
