Israeli airstrikes on central Beirut have killed at least five people and injured 24 in the third attack on the Lebanese capital in two days, according to the Ministry of Public Health. The strike targeted Zuqaq al-Blat, a working-class district near the parliament, embassies, and a United Nations building.
The National News Agency (NNA) reported that the attack hit an apartment close to a Shia Muslim place of worship. Zuqaq al-Blat, home to many displaced residents fleeing strikes in southern Lebanon, saw chaotic scenes as security forces cordoned off the area and locals joined rescue efforts.
The attack follows a similar strike on Sunday in the Mar Elias neighbourhood, which killed three people, including a woman. Hezbollah has confirmed that one of the airstrikes killed its spokesman, Mohammad Afif.
Israel is yet to comment on the strikes, which have escalated tensions in Beirut amid the ongoing conflict.
