An Israeli shell struck the Holy Family Catholic Church compound in Gaza on Thursday, killing three people and injuring ten others, including the parish priest. Church officials confirmed the attack, which also damaged parts of the compound where hundreds had taken refuge amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, now in its 21st month.
The Israeli military has apologised and launched an investigation, stating that efforts are made to avoid civilian casualties and protect religious sites.

Victims included a long-serving church janitor and an elderly woman receiving care in a Caritas tent. Parish priest Gabriel Romanelli sustained minor injuries.
The compound had been sheltering both Christian and Muslim civilians, including children with disabilities.
Pope Leo XIV condemned the strike, calling for an immediate ceasefire. He expressed sorrow over the incident and reiterated his appeal for dialogue, reconciliation, and lasting peace in the region.
