Israeli strikes kill two in southern Gaza despite ceasefire

Israeli forces have carried out artillery and helicopter attacks on southern Gaza despite a United States-brokered ceasefire, killing a five-year-old girl and her uncle after a tent housing displaced Palestinians was hit, according to local officials. The strike took place in the coastal al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis, where four other people, including children, were wounded.

Gaza health authorities say the latest incident brings the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since the truce began in October to at least 422. Israel’s military said it struck a Hamas fighter who was allegedly planning an imminent attack, but did not provide evidence, and it was not clear whether the claim referred to the tent bombing.

Separately, the Palestinian Civil Defence said a home damaged in earlier Israeli strikes collapsed in the Maghazi camp in central Gaza, killing a 29-year-old man and his eight-year-old son. Rescue teams said fuel shortages and a lack of equipment were limiting their ability to respond to similar incidents, as large parts of Gaza remain heavily damaged.

Meanwhile, Palestinians have renewed calls for the reopening of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, which remains closed. The crossing is expected to be part of a phased ceasefire agreement that includes increased humanitarian aid and prisoner exchanges, but aid groups say Israeli restrictions continue to hamper deliveries into the territory.
