Ivory Coast’s main opposition figure, Tidjane Thiam, has announced his resignation as party leader — but says he’s not stepping away from politics.
In a speech shared on social media, Thiam said he’s placing his mandate as party president in the hands of party members, citing the interest of the movement. But he reaffirmed his commitment to lead his party to victory in the 2025 presidential election, despite being barred from contesting.

Thiam, a former French citizen, renounced his French passport in March to meet eligibility requirements. However, an Ivorian court removed him from the electoral list, claiming he forfeited his Ivorian nationality when he took up French citizenship in 1987.
Meanwhile, 83-year-old President Alassane Ouattara has yet to confirm whether he’ll seek re-election, though he’s expressed readiness to “continue serving” the country.
