Jenin: Israeli Military Launches Major Operation In West Bank city

Health officials say eight Palestinians have been killed and 80 injured, after intense exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and armed Palestinian militants in Jenin refugee camp, in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military began what appears to be one of its most extensive operations in the territory in years with drone strikes early on Monday.

Israel says it has, in its own words, “dealt a heavy blow to terrorist organisations”, but Palestinians accuses it of a war crime.

Jenin, according to Israel, has become a stronghold of a new generation of Palestinian militants who, they say, have become deeply frustrated by the Palestinian Authority’s aging leadership and the restrictions of the Israeli occupation.

The city has seen repeated Israeli military raids in the past year and local Palestinians have been linked to multiple shooting attacks targeting Israelis.

US Palestinian-American Congresswoman, Rashida Tlaib, who represents the state of Michigan, condemned Israeli military’s incursion into the refugee camp in Jenin.

In a Twitter post yesterday, Congresswoman Tlaib said Israeli forces were “blocking ambulances” and preventing wounded Palestinians from receiving medical attention. She also retweeted a video shared by Al Jazeera showing an Israeli bulldozer destroying a road in the Jenin camp.

She also called on the US to cease its support for what she called “violent Israeli apartheid”.
