Health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations have protested in Abuja against a proposed health sector regulatory bill before the National Assembly.
The demonstrators gathered at Unity Fountain on Thursday and marched through parts of the Federal Capital Territory, warning that the bill could undermine the autonomy of various healthcare professions.
They said a key provision would place all medical and allied health workers under the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, a move they argue would weaken existing regulatory bodies for nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists.

The National Secretary of JOHESU, Martin Egbanubi, said the unions would submit a petition to the National Assembly, adding that they would continue to engage lawmakers to ensure their concerns are reflected in the final legislation.
