John Utaka Appointed Head Coach of Montpellier Women’s Side

Former Nigeria international John Utaka has been named head coach of ASPTT Montpellier Féminin ahead of the 2025–26 season.

The 43-year-old replaces Yannick Chandioux, who guided the French club to consecutive sixth-place finishes in the past two seasons. Utaka’s appointment reflects Montpellier’s ambition to push for higher honours in France’s top-flight women’s league.

Well regarded within the club, Utaka played a decisive role in Montpellier’s 2012 Ligue 1 triumph and has since earned a UEFA A Licence. He previously worked with the club’s youth setup and briefly managed the women’s team on an interim basis.

A seasoned forward during his playing days, Utaka featured for clubs across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, winning the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.

Montpellier’s current squad includes Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu, fresh from lifting the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
