Joseph Yobo, Other Youths Back Resumption Of Oil Exploration In Ogoni, Seek Youth Inclusion

Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo and youth leaders from the four Ogoni local government areas in Rivers State have voiced their support for the resumption of oil exploration in the region. However, they are calling for active involvement of youths and women in the decision-making process.

During an extraordinary stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, youth representatives from Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme Local Government Areas praised President Bola Tinubu for his decisive action in addressing the Ogoni struggle for social, economic, and environmental justice, which led to the suspension of oil activities for over 30 years.

In a communiqué presented by Legborsi Yamaabana, President of the Ogoni Youth Federation, the youths expressed confidence in National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu’s ability to oversee the smooth resumption of oil production in the area. They stressed that any decision on selecting an investor for Oil Mining Licenses (OML) 11 and 51 must involve meaningful consultations with the Ogoni people, ensuring their right to free, prior, and informed consent is respected.

The Ogoni youths also extended their gratitude to NSA  Ribadu, describing him as a “distinguished friend of the Ogoni people,” and commended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for their efforts in facilitating the meeting, setting aside political differences for the sake of the region’s progress.
