Judge Refers Nnamdi Kanu’s Medical Motion to Chief Judge for Reassignment

A Federal High Court judge in Abuja has referred a motion filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, to the Chief Judge for reassignment. Kanu is asking to be transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja for urgent medical care.

Justice Musa Liman returned the case file after Kanu’s counsel, Uchenna Njoku, SAN, applied for reassignment, noting that the court’s annual vacation ends on September 15. Counsel to the Department of State Services, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, did not oppose the application.

Earlier, Justice Liman explained that the vacation court could not handle all matters before it, with more than 30 cases listed and only six taken. He said under Section 46(8) of the Federal High Court Rules, any case not concluded during vacation must be referred back to the Chief Judge.

The judge acknowledged the urgency of Kanu’s health concerns but noted the application was filed late. He ordered the case file to be sent to the registry for reassignment, where it will be scheduled for hearing after the vacation period.
