The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation has clarified that no inmate approved for clemency under President Bola Tinubu’s recent prerogative of mercy has yet been released. The clarification follows public debate over the presidential pardon granted to several inmates, including historical figures and former public officials.
Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) said the process remains at its final administrative stage, where all names are undergoing legal and procedural verification before release orders are issued. He explained that the review is designed to uphold transparency and due diligence, not to cause delay.

Mr Fagbemi assured Nigerians that once all checks are complete, the public will be informed, stressing that the rule of law “does not rush, but ensures fairness” in implementing the President’s mercy decisions.
