Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, has alleged that corruption is widespread within the Nigerian judiciary, contributing to eroded public confidence in the justice system. Speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Law Week in Abuja, he cited delayed justice, biased rulings, and increasing use of ex parte orders in political cases as major concerns.
El-Rufai, a lawyer and graduate of the University of London, criticised what he described as the judiciary’s tilt toward the interests of the rich and powerful, adding that justice in Nigeria often appears compromised. He accused some legal practitioners of exploiting court processes for political advantage.

He also condemned the National Judicial Council (NJC), saying it has failed in its disciplinary oversight. He cited opaque judicial appointments, inconsistent electoral rulings, and minimal consequences for erring judges as signs of systemic failure within the judiciary.
El-Rufai noted that once-respected judges now face widespread public criticism, adding that the judiciary must reflect on whether it is still upholding justice fairly. He called for urgent reforms to restore integrity and public trust in the judicial system.
