Kaduna Nurses Threaten Statewide Strike Over Stalled Promotions

Nurses in Kaduna State have threatened to embark on a statewide strike in 2026 over the continued failure of health authorities to conduct promotion exercises. The warning was issued by the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Kaduna State Council, Comrade Ishaku Yakubu, in a New Year address.

Yakubu said the non-conduct of promotions by the Ministry of Health and some of its parastatals has affected morale and productivity among nurses. He described the situation as a deliberate neglect of career progression and warned that the union would no longer tolerate delays that undermine professional dignity.

The union leader said nurses are prepared to escalate their response in the new year, including declaring an industrial dispute if promotions are not conducted as and when due. He added that a broader shutdown of health services could occur if authorities fail to act promptly.

Yakubu also confirmed that nurses at the National Ear Care Centre in Kaduna are already on strike over issues relating to professional designation and salary placement. He said the action is in its second week with full compliance, and warned that other health institutions across the state could join in solidarity if the matter remains unresolved.
