Kenyan authorities have recovered at least five bodies from shallow graves in Kilifi County, near Malindi. The discovery was made during excavations at a site linked to a religious cult, close to where hundreds of victims were found two years ago.
Government pathologist Dr Richard Njoroge said six suspected graves were opened, yielding five bodies and scattered human remains. He added that more graves are expected to be found as the search area is vast.

Kenya’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions believes some victims were starved or suffocated under extreme religious practices. At least 11 suspects are under investigation in connection with the deaths.
The latest discovery recalls the 2023 Shakahola Forest tragedy, when more than 400 bodies were exhumed in one of the world’s largest cult-related mass killings.
