Senator of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Heebah Kingibe

A dramatic scene unfolded in the Senate chamber on Thursday when Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, walked out in protest after being barred from presenting a motion on demolitions in the nation’s capital.

The incident followed a heated exchange between Senator Kingibe and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong, Oyelola Ashiru, and others intervened, urging the senate president to allow her to present her motion. After a brief standoff, Senator Kingibe returned to the chamber, but was instructed by Senate President Akpabio to apologise for her actions. Initially resistant, she eventually complied.

The FCT senator’s motion addressed the ongoing demolitions in the FCT, ordered by Minister Nyesom Wike over alleged non-development of allocated plots and the illegal construction of structures. Senator Kingibe condemned the demolitions, saying they violated court orders and caused severe hardship, with many losing properties worth billions of naira.
