Kukah Says Nigeria Squandered Its Nation-Building Chance

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has said Nigeria lost the chance to build a united and prosperous nation after independence due to poor leadership, political assassinations and military rule. Speaking on Arise Television, he argued that the country has failed to articulate a national dream capable of inspiring its people.

The cleric noted that no Nigerian leader has delivered a speech with the impact of the 1960 independence address, contrasting this with the “mythology” of the American Dream. He said the military’s dominance stifled intellectual debate and eroded institutions that could have sustained development.

Bishop Kukah added that the North still struggles with the trauma of the 1966 assassinations of Sir Ahmadu Bello and Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa. He stressed that Nigeria’s refusal to confront such painful chapters continues to undermine unity, vision, and effective governance.
