Kwankwaso Warns US Remarks Could Deepen Nigeria’s Fault Lines

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has expressed concern over comments by former US President Donald Trump, who recently listed Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and accused its government of ignoring attacks on Christians.

Senator Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, described Trump’s remarks as troubling, warning they could worsen divisions in an already fragile nation. He said Nigeria remains a sovereign country confronting complex security threats that cut across ethnic, political, and religious lines.

The former governor urged the United States to assist Nigeria with advanced technology to combat insecurity instead of issuing polarising statements. He also called on the federal government to strengthen diplomatic ties by appointing seasoned envoys and permanent ambassadors to engage Washington more effectively.
