Labour Party lawmakers reject suspension of Anambra assembly member

The Labour Party caucus in the national assembly has rejected the suspension of Bernard Abuchi Udemezue, a member of the Anambra state house of assembly. Udemezue, who represents Ayamelum constituency, was suspended without pay on Tuesday over allegations of unparliamentary conduct, inciting comments on social media, and abuse of legislative privileges.

In a joint statement, Senator Tony Nwoye and House of Representatives member Afam Ogene said the suspension undermines democratic values. They argued that Udemezue was being persecuted for exercising his constitutional duty of oversight.

The lawmakers also raised concerns about alleged diversion of local government funds and accused the Chukwuma Soludo administration of marginalising Ayamelum. They said depriving the constituency of representation in the assembly was unfair and undemocratic.

The caucus has called on the leadership of the Anambra assembly to revisit the suspension, grant Udemezue a fair hearing, and investigate the issues he raised.
