Labour Slams Pay Rise Plan for Politicians

The Nigeria Labour Congress has strongly criticised plans by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to raise the salaries of political office holders, describing the move as unjust and insensitive.

In a statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero said such a review would deepen inequality between politicians and civil servants, worsening poverty in a country already ranked high in multi-dimensional deprivation. The union warned that turning public office into a platform for wealth-making would fuel desperation for power and undermine national stability.

The NLC argued that civil servants face frozen wages and rising living costs, while politicians benefit from generous perks and uniform pay nationwide, regardless of state resources.

The congress demanded full disclosure of current earnings and benchmarks for any review. It urged the commission to suspend the exercise to avoid what it called a looming social backlash.
