Nigeria’s labour unions have strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and a misuse of executive authority.
In a joint statement, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, President Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress, TUC, leader Festus Osifo, called for an immediate reversal of the decision. They argued that the move contravenes Part II, Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution and urged the president to adhere to the legal process outlined in Section 305(6).

The unions warned that they would not remain passive while workers’ rights and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians were jeopardised by political manoeuvres.
The declaration has sparked controversy, with critics questioning its legality and necessity. The presidency has yet to respond to the unions’ demands, but the move is expected to fuel further debate over executive overreach in Nigeria’s governance.
