The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit and standard bus routes. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority announced the decision on Monday, February 23, 2026.
LAMATA said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the approval following appeals from regulated public transport operators who raised concerns about rising operational costs. The new fare structure will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.
In a statement signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the agency said the adjustment is intended to cushion the impact of sustained economic challenges affecting transit services. It added that the review aligns with the state’s previously approved annual fare review mechanism.

The agency cited inflation, which stood at 15.2 per cent at the end of 2025 according to the National Bureau of Statistics, as well as higher costs for maintenance, spare parts and staff salaries following the new national minimum wage. It said operators are also investing in newer and more fuel-efficient buses to maintain service standards.
