The Lagos State House of Assembly has met with residents of the Makoko community affected by recent demolitions and has directed relevant ministries and agencies to stop further demolition in the area. The meeting was led by the Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams.
Mr Adams, who chairs the House Committee on Makoko Demolition, said the directive applies to Makoko, Oko-Afon and Shogunro communities. He assured residents that lawmakers would carry out an on the spot assessment to determine the exact setback limits being enforced by the state government.
The Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, Olajide Babatunde, told the meeting that the Lagos State Government has no plan to wipe off Makoko. He said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved two million dollars for the community’s development and promised compensation for those affected by the demolition.

Community leaders appealed to the government to stop further demolition, saying they prefer to engage directly with authorities. State officials said the exercise was carried out for safety and urban renewal reasons, noting that structures within 100 metres of high tension transmission lines across the lagoon were marked for removal.
