The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been impeached over multiple statutory and financial violations. Obasa, who has been at the centre of several controversial financial dealings, was removed by fellow members of the Assembly.
Following his removal, Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who now assumes the role of Speaker. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as the House’s Chief Whip.
“I believe that I will be faithful as the speaker of the legal standards of assembly, that I will perform my functions honestly, to the best of my ability, faithfully and in accordance with the constitution of the federal government.”
Mojeed Fatai has been appointed as the new Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. The move comes just a month after Obasa was accused of allegedly spending N17 billion on the construction of a gate leading to the Assembly building, sparking public outrage.

A member of the state assembly speaks to why they impeached the speaker.
“The members of the Parliament today have decided to change the leadership of the House. And you know, the Constitution made it clear that the House has the power to regulate its proceedings. So the members of the House felt they had enough of the right honourable leadership at their university. And today, we have unanimously agreed that the right honourable Muthuswana Miranda Laspat becomes the new Speaker of the House. So it was a resolution concurred to by all members of the Parliament. And so be it. And Honourable Fatah Emoji Adebola as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly. And as we speak, all the principal positions have been dissolved. And all the standing committees have been dissolved. So the House, as you can see, we have resolved to work together and ensure that we move the Parliament to the next level. We cannot open our eyes and allow this Parliament to dwindle. We hold the Constituents a duty, and we hold Lagos State a duty of ensuring that the sanctity of the House and the integrity of this House is restored. And that is why we have all unanimously agreed to carry out this action to save our image and save the State.”
Obasa’s impeachment follows a series of financial controversies, which had drawn significant scrutiny and calls for accountability from both the public and political figures.
