The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged the Attorney-General to fully enforce the 2015 Tenancy Law, amid growing concerns over indiscriminate rent increases across the state.
Lawmakers also called on the Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, to step up public awareness on tenants’ rights under the law.

The resolution followed a motion by Honourable Sa’ad Olumoh, who cited Section 37 of the Tenancy Law, which bars unreasonable rent hikes and provides protection for tenants.
Honourable Desmond Elliot, representing Surulere 1, backed the motion, revealing that rents in his constituency had surged by up to 200 percent, largely due to ongoing infrastructural upgrades.
He noted that while development is welcome, it must not serve as an excuse for exploitative practices by landlords.
The Assembly’s action signals a renewed push to curb Lagos’s escalating housing crisis.
