The Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed its disapproval of the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun’s stance against the state police.
The IGP, at a national dialogue on state police organised by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, had opposed the establishment of state police, saying the state governors could use the police force under their control for political or personal gain and undermine human rights and security.
Speaking at plenary on Monday, the Speaker of Lagos Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, directed the Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, to write the IGP and the National Assembly conveying the state lawmakers’ rejection of IG Egbetokun’s position.

Speaker Obasa noted that despite the existing federal police, insecurity still persists in the country.
The House, which commended the Speaker’s position, argued that the current police structure is inadequate for securing the country, as they also pointed out that many states already have local security outfits, making state police a necessary and practical solution.
