News - by RadioNow / Aug. 30th, 2022

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has begun the pilot phase of the use of buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) for passenger operations.

In a statement signed by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communications at LAMATA, the agency says the innovation aims to curtail air pollution in Lagos caused by gasoline buses.

The pilot phase 10 buses, described as high-occupancy vehicles, will cover CNG-powered buses that plow the Marina/CMS to Lekki axis and the Ajah-Epe bus routes.

LAMATA intends to increase the number of buses to 100 after a review period that proves the sustainability of the use of CNG.

Mr. Ojelabi says the fare card, Cowry, will be used to pay for services on the buses.
