The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has raised alarm over an unexplained surge in his electricity bill, which jumped from N2.7 million in March to N29 million in April. Speaking at a roundtable event in Victoria Island, he also criticised the electricity distribution company for frustrating efforts to use a prepaid meter he had acquired.
Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the meeting with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), described the rising energy costs as a burden on ordinary citizens, citing a case where a resident in Surulere was billed N2.8 million—more than his annual rent. He said the ongoing issues with estimated billing were making life harder for many Lagosians.

The event featured the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Lagos State Government and the REA to improve electricity access in rural communities. Hamzat commended the state’s Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, for championing the new solar power initiative.
Ogunleye said the partnership would bring lasting solutions to underserved communities and open new opportunities for residents to enjoy stable and reliable electricity. He added that Lagos was now poised to set an example for other states in power sector development.
