Lagos Generates $71.6 Million from Detty December 2024 Festivities

Lagos State has recorded a significant revenue boost during the 2024 festive season, generating $71.6 million from the popular “Detty December” activities. Idris Aregbe, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, made the announcement during the review of the ‘Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report’.

The $71.6 million in revenue came from tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors, with hotels contributing over $44 million and short-let apartments adding $13 million. Aregbe highlighted Lagos’ status as Africa’s tourism and entertainment capital, drawing both local and international visitors, including the Nigerian diaspora, known as IJGBs, and global tourists.

Aregbe praised the success of the season, noting its role in promoting Nigerian arts, culture, and music, and strengthening the city’s ties with the global community. He acknowledged the efforts of Lagos’ residents, industry stakeholders, and performers whose creativity made the season a cultural and economic triumph.

The Special Adviser also commended the report from MO Africa Consulting, which reflected the positive impact of the festive season. He emphasised that tourism remains a crucial driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos, with the “Ember” season playing a pivotal role.
