Lagos Impounds Heavy Trucks on Third Mainland Bridge in Safety Crackdown

The Lagos State Government has impounded over ten articulated trucks weighing above nine tonnes for flouting access restrictions on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The operation, which began over the weekend, forms part of a broader campaign to protect public infrastructure and ensure commuter safety.

Announcing the enforcement, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, said the state had issued repeated warnings and engaged stakeholders prior to the clampdown.

He stressed that the bridge, recently rehabilitated, is off-limits to heavy-duty vehicles, and violators would face sanctions including seizure and prosecution.

The exercise is backed by newly installed surveillance systems—high-definition cameras now monitor traffic and detect breaches in real time.

The action is in line with the state’s THEMES+ agenda on improved traffic flow and infrastructure protection.

Mr. Giwa urged transport operators to comply with designated routes, warning that defaulters risk serious legal consequences.
