The Lagos State Government has given traders at Alabarago Market a 24-hour deadline to comply with environmental regulations or face immediate closure.
The warning follows an impromptu inspection by Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, who also visited Idi-Araba and Orile-Iganmu. He said the market, previously shut earlier in the year for similar violations, had once again degenerated into a dumpsite, with traders indiscriminately dumping waste and obstructing drainage systems.

He described the level of filth as “unacceptable” and warned that the government would no longer tolerate repeated disregard for sanitation laws.
At Idi-Araba, Mr. Wahab uncovered illegal operations linked to a banned cart-pusher network, while in Orile-Iganmu, he assessed challenges around the partially completed System 5 drainage channel.
With Eid al-Adha approaching, Mr. Wahab appealed to residents to prioritise hygiene and dispose of waste responsibly. Enforcement, he said, would be swift and uncompromising.
