The Lagos State Government has launched a new “Trash for Cash” initiative aimed at encouraging residents to exchange recyclable waste for money. The project, unveiled by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, is part of efforts to promote a cleaner and greener Lagos.
In a post on his official X handle, Mr Wahab said the programme, implemented through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), involves weekly community sensitisation exercises to show residents how to earn income from recyclables. He added that residents who participate will be rewarded every Thursday for helping keep the city clean.

LAWMA confirmed that its teams are engaging communities across local government areas to promote proper waste sorting, timely bill payment, and zero roadside dumping. Recent sensitisation drives have taken place in areas like Agege, where residents and shop owners were educated on separating recyclables from other waste.
According to the state government, the initiative will create income opportunities, enhance recycling culture, and support Lagos’s vision of becoming Africa’s cleanest and most sustainable megacity.
