Amid the ongoing speakership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly, ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa made a dramatic return to the Assembly Complex on Thursday. Obasa, who was removed from office on 13 January 2025, arrived under heavy security escort, marking his first public appearance at the complex since his removal.
A crowd of his supporters gathered at the entrance, chanting in solidarity as he walked into the legislative chambers. Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I in the 40-member House, was voted out by more than two-thirds of lawmakers over alleged misconduct. His former deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as Speaker, becoming the first female to lead the legislative arm in Lagos State.

However, lawmakers have firmly rejected Obasa’s claim that he remains Speaker. Speaking with journalists at the Assembly Complex, members reaffirmed their support for Meranda, insisting that she is the legitimate leader of the House and that Obasa’s removal stands.
The Lagos State Police Command has yet to make an official statement on the situation. When contacted, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin declined to comment, stating that Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh would address the matter later.
