Lagos Moves to Demolish Shanties in Makoko Over Safety Fears

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to clear shanties built directly under high-tension power lines in Makoko, Yaba, citing urgent safety risks for residents. Authorities say the exercise follows similar demolitions at Oworonshoki, where unsafe structures were recently removed near the Third Mainland Bridge.

According to the Office of Urban and Regional Planning, repeated meetings were held with residents and community leaders to warn them of the dangers, but many ignored the appeals. Officials stressed that the move is part of wider efforts to protect lives and restore order in high-risk areas.

The government also linked some traffic robberies on the Third Mainland Bridge to individuals allegedly using the shanties as cover. It said clearing the illegal structures would not only reduce safety hazards from power lines but also address security concerns around the waterfront settlement.
