Lagos Orders E-Hailing Vehicle Inspections to Boost Safety

The Lagos State Government has ordered all licensed e-hailing operators to present their vehicles for inspection to enforce safety standards, verify records and ensure roadworthiness.

Transport Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi said the move followed the discovery of poorly maintained vehicles on licensed platforms, warning that unfit cars would be barred from Lagos roads.

He also criticised weak database systems, saying they hinder efforts to track crimes linked to ride-hailing services.

Permanent Secretary Olawale Musa stressed that all vehicles must be state-registered and drivers certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute. Operators were told to update records on the ministry’s digital platform or risk licence suspension.

Major operators, including Uber, Bolt and InDrive, pledged new safety measures such as stricter driver checks, panic buttons and enhanced onboarding to improve service and passenger security.
