The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Moshood Jimoh, has denied any involvement of officers in the scuffle that took place at the Lagos State House of Assembly chamber on 17 February. His statement comes amid reports of chaos in the legislative complex following rumours of Speaker Mojisola Meranda’s possible resignation.
On Monday, security operatives sealed off Meranda’s office, with police personnel and vans stationed around the assembly to prevent a breakdown of law and order. However, there were claims that the police’s role as the lead internal security agency was undermined, as assembly staff were seen demanding the exit of certain security operatives from the chamber.

Addressing the incident on Tuesday, Jimoh clarified that police officers are responsible for maintaining security at the assembly but have no role within the hallowed chamber itself. He stressed that officers were positioned outside the legislative complex in accordance with the law.
He reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to ensuring security at the house of assembly while adhering to legal boundaries, even as tensions persist over the assembly’s leadership situation.
