The Managing Director and CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has revealed that Lagos residents generate a staggering 5.46 million tonnes of waste annually. He shared this figure during a stakeholders’ forum on sustainable waste management held in Lagos on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, he emphasized the pressing need for effective waste management, given the city’s population of over 23 million people. He also outlined LAWMA’s efforts to tackle the challenge, highlighting key achievements and unveiling strategic plans for improved waste collection, treatment, and disposal.

Mr Gbadegesin stressed that LAWMA’s approach is built on a comprehensive framework designed to ensure environmental sustainability and public health across the state.
